The Golden Rule
What is the golden rule? Matthew 7:12 - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you want to be treated with kindness, be kind to others. Someday we will be judged for how we have treated people, so the way we treat people matters, it matters to God so it should matter to us. If we are constantly putting others down or thinking we are better than them how is that helpful to anyone? Our attitudes or egos need to be humble not just in front of God but in front of others. We reap what we sow.
We should be sowing kindness, love, forgiveness, compassion, gentleness, generosity, and genuine care for others. I know sometimes it can be hard especially if the other person has a hard heart and has maybe narcissistic tendencies or is just a down right bully with a nasty personality, but maybe if we sow the fruits of the spirit towards that person and pray for change in their heart and attitude things will start to look differently for not just them but you as well and it won’t be so difficult with them anymore. We don’t have to be best friends with everyone but we can choose to be kind.
Kindness in your heart has to be better than anger and bitterness. Sometimes that person with the nasty personality is very insecure and feels the need to treat others in a bulldozer kind of way in order to feel better about themselves or to feel in control, we know it’s wrong, but they don’t see how it’s wrong and sinful.
So what can we do as Christians? Try not to stoop to their level, walk away when possible and be helpful as much as you can and most of all pray and set an example with how you live and treat others. We have to remember He is where the joy is and He is our basis for how to live and why we live. Go out and live each day for Him and live out His truth.
If our relationship is strong with Him we can’t fail, in life or with others because He sees all. He knows our true hearts and intentions. And someday we will either be rewarded for how we treated others or we will be separated from Him and that is the worst punishment of all, there’s no coming back to Him after that, so let’s strive to be better and do better with each other.
Forgive others, let the past go and tell Him you’re sorry for your sins and be filled with the Holy Spirit and go and shine His love on others today, because how we treat others matters, and remember you always have a direct line to heaven yourself to talk to Jesus anytime.
